About California

California

California layers a progressive state income tax and a 7.25% base sales tax on top of federal taxes. Property tax is governed statewide by Proposition 13 but billed and rated at the county level — choose a county for the real number.

It also has the highest gasoline taxes in the country — a per-gallon excise you pay every time you fill up. At the U.S.-average of roughly 500 gallons a year, the federal (18.4¢) and California (63.4¢) excise alone come to about $400; enter your own gallons to make it exact.
